The business registration number is a set of unique numbers that comprises 12 digits obtained upon successful registration of the company with the SSM. The 12-digit registration number proves that the company has been legally registered in Malaysia.

The registration number is used to identify a company and printed on its certificate of incorporation. It is also used for verification purposes for matters related to the company.

Thus, it will exist throughout the lifetime on the company’s lifetime.

How do I read the company registration number?

The Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) introduced a new format of business registration number in October 2019. This format applies to all types of business entities and replaces the previous system’s various styles of registration numbers.

Simply put, the new format standardises the registration numbers for all businesses, companies and Limited Liability Partnerships in Malaysia. Overall, this change aims to streamline and modernize the registration process for businesses in Malaysia.

The new business registration number is comprises of three parts:

  1. The first four digits indicate the year of registration.
  2. The next two numbers denote the type of business entity, as follows:

  • 01: Local company
  • 02: Foreign company
  • 03: Business
  • 04: Local limited liability partnership (LLP)
  • 05: Foreign LLP
  • 06: LLP for professional practice

  1. The last six digits are the registration number sequence.

What is the Purpose of the Business Registration Number?

Aside from identifying the different businesses in Malaysia, the business registration number is essential when carrying out formal applications with the government and other administrative matters.

For instance, this number will be used in the following scenarios:

  • Opening a corporate bank account in Malaysia
  • Registering for licenses and permits
  • Registering the company profile with government agencies like the Employee Provident Fund (EPF)

In order for a business entity to register such profiles, the SSM must be able to identify the Company on any government official website to ensure its legitimacy. Therefore, the business registration number is always required.

According to the Malaysia Consumer Protection Regulations 2012, every business must also indicate its business registration number on its official website–be they a brick-and-mortar or online business. This practice is also a safety measure that prevents consumers from being scammed.
